'Is Poetry Pretentious?"

"Is Poetry Pretentious?"

Greg Budig 2020

Is poetry pretentious?

With its oversized,

gangly words.

Some people think

it's resplendent!

Others think it's

for the birds.

Sometimes it rhymes.

Sometimes not so much.

Sometimes it doesn't

really make sense.

Some people find

it so captivating.

While others take offense.

"Oh look at these toes,

they're Longfellow's!!'

Was an ancient form of jest.

"I'm a poet and I know it!"

Was equally as  bad,

sometimes you wish

it was given a rest.

An expression of various

feelings from the very

depths of your soul.

The words can be a

painful struggle,until

your thoughts become

realized and whole.

A poem can be like

a nursery rhyme,

with a happy and

merry tone.

Written in soft and

simple lines, but

isn't it still a poem?

This poem is not about

much of anything.

It's not angry or relentless.

But it makes you think,

and makes you laugh.

And I found a word that

rhymes with pretentious.

The End
